Our Story

Respect Her Game began with a simple love for basketball — and a vision to make the game mean something more.

Founded by Déja Rawls, a former collegiate athlete and mentor, Respect Her Game was born out of her personal journey through the highs and challenges of women’s basketball.

Throughout her playing career, Déja recognized the lack of respect for the women’s game — the overlooked talent, limited opportunities, and unequal recognition. That realization became her motivation to create a platform where young female athletes could be seen, heard, and valued.

She knew that while talent opens doors, confidence, leadership, and community are what help young women truly thrive — both on and off the court.

How It Started

Respect Her Game Hoops began with small group and individual training sessions, helping young athletes sharpen their skills and strengthen their mindset.

As word spread, the program grew — fueled by community support and a shared passion for empowering girls through basketball.

In 2023, the Finley Recreation Center opened its doors for Déja to launch the first-ever Respect Her Game Summer High School Basketball League. With the help of the basketball community and Philadelphia Recreational Leaders, the league became a space where young women could compete, connect, and be celebrated for their growth as athletes and leaders.

Where We Are Now

What started as a local training effort has evolved into a powerful community for young female athletes — built on teamwork, mentorship, and empowerment.

Today, Respect Her Game Hoops stands as more than a sports program — it’s a sisterhood. A space where athletes learn that respecting the game also means respecting themselves and others.

Through tournaments, leagues, showcases, training and leadership workshops, every event and practice is designed to build confidence, discipline, and community.

As the organization continues to grow, our mission remains the same.
